José M. Pérez-Pomares (b. 1972) obtained his PhD in Biological Sciences at the University of Málaga, Spain (2000). He was post-doctoral fellow at the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, USA (2000-2002). After returning to Spain, Dr. Pérez-Pomares served as Research Assistant (2002-2004), Assistant Professor (2004-2010) and Associate Professor (2010-) at the Department of Animal Biology, University of Malaga (UMA). In 2010 he was appointed as Visiting Scientist at the National Center for Cardiovascular Research (CNIC) in Madrid, Spain. He and his group joined Bionand´s Nanobiotechnology Area in 2014.

Dr. Pérez-Pomares is Coordinator of the Masters in Evolutionary Biology and Vice-dean for Postgraduate Affaires and International Mobility at the Faculty of Sciences, University of Málaga. (2016-) and Vice-chair of the Nucleus (board) of the Working Group on “Development, Anatomy and Pathology” of the European Society of Cardiology, the largest clinical and biomedical society in Europe. He is a frequent reviewer for prestigious international journals (cardiovascular sciences, developmental biology, anatomy and morphology) and Associate Editor of the Journal of Developmental Biology (ISSN 2221-3759). Dr. Pérez-Pomares’ has visited multiple research and academic institutions, where he was invited as speaker (Harvard University, Boston, USA; University of Amsterdam, Amsterdam, The Netherlands; University of Southern California, Los Angeles, USA; University of Padova, Padova, Italy; University of Marseille-Aix, Marseille, France; Leiden University, Leiden, The Netherlands; University of Strasbourg, Strasbourg, France).

As PI of the “Cardiovascular Development & Disease” (DeCA) research group at BIONAND, Dr. Pérez-Pomares is interested in the developmental bases of cardiovascular disease, and the team aims at identifying new diagnostic and prognostic markers as well as therapeutical targets and advanced therapies to treat the diseased heart. Fundamental topics at the core of the research performed by DeCA members include cardiovascular progenitor/stem cell differentiation (with a focus in the transcriptional regulation of specific populations of non-myocardial tissues by the transcription factors Wt1, Gata4, COUP-TFII and Notch among others); cellular mechanisms of cardiac repair and regeneration; cardiac fibrosis and heart neovascularization. The research of the DeCA group has been/is funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (MINECO-Plan Nacional I+D+I; MINECO-ISCIII-Cell Therapy Network/TERCEL), the EU Sixth and Seventh Framework Programmes, the NATO Life Science and Technology Program and the Andalusian Government (Junta de Andalucía)

Dr. Pérez-Pomares is author of 10 book chapters and more than 50 publications in peer-reviewed, international journals; the average impact factor of these papers is 3.8 and the associated h-factor is 27 (JCR, Thomson Reuters, September 2016).
