Dr. María Luisa García-Martín has worked in the field of Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Spectroscopy applied to biomedical research since the beginning of her scientific career. She obtained her Ph.D. degree at the Biomedical Research Institute of Madrid (CSIC/UAM). From 2002 to 2005 Dr. García-Martín worked as Research Associate at the University of Arizona (Arizona Cancer Centre). In 2005 she returned to Spain as “Ramón y Cajal” tenured researcher and started her independent career. In 2008 she undertook a position as clinical scientist at Hospital Ntra. Sra. del Rosario (Madrid, Spain). Finally, in 2011, she joined the Andalusian Centre for Nanomedicine and Biotechnology (BIONAND) as head of the NanoImaging Unit and principal investigator of the Biomedical Magnetic Resonance Laboratory. Her research interests are focused on: 1) the development of new methodologies that will allow for a more accurate monitoring of nanotechnology-based therapeutic and diagnostic agents, 2) MRI approaches for molecular imaging of cancer and neurodegenerative diseases, and 3) NMR-based metabolomics of biofluids and intact tissue for early detection of cancer and neurodegenerative diseases.
